AIMS AND AMBITIONS OF HUNIAH TETTEH

My name is Huniah Tetteh. I am a self-taught linguist and African cultural/Ghanaian cultural activist. I aim to promote the learning of Ghanaian languages, especially those that I am good at. The Ga-Dangme languages, the Guan languages and the Akan languages. It is my aim to

  • Create a very comprehensive course for the study of the Ga, Dangme and Guan languages using YouTube mainly as a tool
  • Write enough books in Ghanaian languages and make them accessible since Ghanaian languages do not have enough learning materials
  • Get my brand international and use the influence to market Ghanaian languages
  • Be able to encourage the learning of Ghanaian languages among Ghanaians and even be able to create businesses that would be centred around Ghanaian languages
For 3 years, I have come far and am glad about the level I have attained. People also reach out to me for tourism services due to the fact that many companies overprice their services. I have considered the fact that I am still learning and travelling with someone who wishes to know a new place is a plus for me, so

        - I do not price the tourist any amount rather the tourist pays my transportation to the place of visit                 and maybe if there is a gate fee
        - If after the trip the tourist wishes to give any token of appreciation, that is fine

COMPLETE HISTORY OF THE GUAN PEOPLE AND THEIR LANGUAGES

THE GUANS (This article is directly soucred from my book: Know Ghana Better) The Guans believe themselves to be a subgroup of the Akan tribe (not all of the Guans though). They migrated from Egypt and through several linguistic zones got to Mali. Their territory extended from parts of present day Mali to present day Senegal. They formed clans and the clans were Ndenye, Shuoyi and Le. The clans were formed for purposes of defence and for other linguistic and cultural functions. After some years, a group of Guans who were at present-day Senegal and members of the Shuoyi clan called the Ngbanye set off to Ghana. Perhaps there was a pre-meditated decision by the Ngbanye and the other Guans to find a more suitable settlement. It is also believed that the leader of the Ngbanye sought the assistance of a soothsayer who foretold him that he will be great in a foreign land. THE FORGOTTEN GUANS OF GHANA

Guans are one of the widely spread ethnic groups in Ghana. They were mostly known as the Etsiifo, at least, the Fantes called them so. The Fantes said that they came to meet them at  the coastal areas of Ghana. Well, Etsiifo could not only refer to the coastal Guans, that is, the Awutu, Efutu, Krakye, Larteh etc. but then, a rather linguistically diversed group who could have also once occupied the coasts of Ghana.  Those would be the Nyagbo, Tafi and Asebu (who later amalgamated with the Ahantas in the present day Western Region and the remaining Asebu  group would later migrate to Bowire, a town in the Oti Region to amalgamate with the Kpokpaase-Ofo to form the Bowire tribe.) This development has led the Nyagbo, Tafi and Bowire to be referred to as Guans but it is not so.
