THE FORGOTTEN GUANS OF GHANA

Image
Guans are one of the widely spread ethnic groups in Ghana. They were mostly known as the Etsiifo, at least, the Fantes called them so. The Fantes said that they came to meet them at  the coastal areas of Ghana. Well, Etsiifo could not only refer to the coastal Guans, that is, the Awutu, Efutu, Krakye, Larteh etc. but then, a rather linguistically diversed group who could have also once occupied the coasts of Ghana.  Those would be the Nyagbo, Tafi and Asebu (who later amalgamated with the Ahantas in the present day Western Region and the remaining Asebu  group would later migrate to Bowire, a town in the Oti Region to amalgamate with the Kpokpaase-Ofo to form the Bowire tribe.) This development has led the Nyagbo, Tafi and Bowire to be referred to as Guans but it is not so. They are at the moment a unique linguistic group called the Ghana-Togo Mountain Languages of which, these Guans, Likpe and Buem, have also amalgamated with them.  To further clarify, indeed the...

MODERN GUAN GROUPS OF GHANA

Image
Guans are scattered all over Ghana even to sub-Saharan West Africa. They are not scattered in the sense that they are completely dispersed but then, their settlements is in an amazing pattern that is Western Ghana, Southern Ghana, Northern Ghana, Eastern Ghana. They were initially in clans but we cannot at the moment group them into clans again due to gross linguistic changes that have affected most Guan languages. These groupings have a lot to do with their original clan systems.   Ga-Akan related Guans : These Guans surround...

THE ACCRA ZOO (ACHIMOTA ECOLOGOCAL GARDENS)

Image
The Accra zoo which used to be situated at Kanda experienced management issues for which it was announced that the zoo was being moved to Kumasi so to allow for innovations. Well, after the long wait, the Accra Zoological Gardens has been move to Achimota hence the Achimota Ecological Park is its new name. The zoo lies 1700m deep within the Achimota Forest with poles mounted to direct people entering the zoo. Well, monitor lizards as well as snakes walk freely in the zoo but that does not mean they attack people using the pathway to the zoo. There are monkeys, crocodiles, lions, snakes, different species of birds, deers, antelopes etc all in the zoo. There are hopes to expand the zoo to include more animals. It is worth paying a visit to the zoo so to help management raise more money to help expand it.
