THE NGMALA & TIKALI ANCESTRAL DEITY OF THE GA & AKAN PEOPLE

Image
Ngmala is corrupted from the word Mla that translates as "rules/laws/precautions/regulations" in the Ga language. The Ngmala deities are a group of deities that are seen to be very strict. Ngmala, although worshipped by the Ga people and other coastal dwellers in Ghana is originally an Nzema-Bawule deity. (Ngmala is pronounced Ŋmala) Ga people call their aboriginal deities the Kpele deities and call the non-Ga or non-Dangme aboriginal deities as Tsofa woji. These deities are mainly concerntrated in Teshie, a town in the Greater-AccraRegion of Ghana. It is believed that the Ngmala deities got to Accra with the help of one lady at Opare krom who befriended a Ga man. This relationship helped introduced Ngmala to Ga. Very prominent Ngmala priests in Ghana include Nana Kwaku Bonsam. but they may have a different name for the Ngmala cult. The Ngmala cult is believed to have originated from a variant of the Asuo Tano deity which has found its way into the Bawule areas in the Ivory

THE COMPLETE LIST OF LANGUAGES SPOKEN IN GHANA

Image
During my Ghana tour, in writing the book, KNOW GHANA BETTER , I had encounters with several different languages and I thought it wise to share with you all since it may be very necessary. But mind you, this article is copyright protected so please, do not extract this information for selfish gains without seeking permission from the author of the book  KNOW   GHANA   BETTER and the administrator of these Youtube channels, Huniah-Yourhighness Tv and LEARN GUAN WITH HUNIAH. Now, the total list of languages could be debatable for the fact that there are dialects within languages and some dialects could be seperate languages on their own. Thus, in this writeup, I only present the raw facts as I have found them and it is up to the reader to make his/her own judgements. Greater-Accra Region 1. Ga 2. Dangme (dialects: Klogbi (Krobo), Gbugblã (Prampram), Ada gbi) Cental Region 3. Fante (dialects: Gomoa, Agona, T'di Fante, Wassa) 4. Efutu (dialects: Senya, Simpa) 5. Awutu Western  &a

THE FORGOTTEN GUANS OF GHANA

Image
Guans are one of the widely spread ethnic groups in Ghana. They were mostly known as the Etsiifo, at least, the Fantes called them so. The Fantes said that they came to meet them at  the coastal areas of Ghana. Well, Etsiifo could not only refer to the coastal Guans, that is, the Awutu, Efutu, Krakye, Larteh etc. but then, a rather linguistically diversed group who could have also once occupied the coasts of Ghana.  Those would be the Nyagbo, Tafi and Asebu (who later amalgamated with the Ahantas in the present day Western Region and the remaining Asebu  group would later migrate to Bowire, a town in the Oti Region to amalgamate with the Kpokpaase-Ofo to form the Bowire tribe.) This development has led the Nyagbo, Tafi and Bowire to be referred to as Guans but it is not so. They are at the moment a unique linguistic group called the Ghana-Togo Mountain Languages of which, these Guans, Likpe and Buem, have also amalgamated with them.  To further clarify, indeed the Guans could have o

MODERN GUAN GROUPS OF GHANA

Image
Guans are scattered all over Ghana even to sub-Saharan West Africa. They are not scattered in the sense that they are completely dispersed but then, their settlements is in an amazing pattern that is Western Ghana, Southern Ghana, Northern Ghana, Eastern Ghana. They were initially in clans but we cannot at the moment group them into clans again due to gross linguistic changes that have affected most Guan languages. They have assimilated lots of vocabularies from surrounding languages depending on where they are and this have changed their languages and even accents depending on their current settlement. We can group them into 4 language groups and they are : v   The Ga-Akan related Guans (Southern Guans) v   Akan-related Guans (Western Guans) v   Ewe-Akan related Guans (Oti Guans) v   Northern Guans Let us learn about the 4 groups. These groupings have a lot to do with their original clan systems.   Ga-Akan related Guans : These Guans surround the Ga-Dangme communiti

THE ACCRA ZOO (ACHIMOTA ECOLOGOCAL GARDENS)

Image
The Accra zoo which used to be situated at Kanda experienced management issues for which it was announced that the zoo was being moved to Kumasi so to allow for innovations. Well, after the long wait, the Accra Zoological Gardens has been move to Achimota hence the Achimota Ecological Park is its new name. The zoo lies 1700m deep within the Achimota Forest with poles mounted to direct people entering the zoo. Well, monitor lizards as well as snakes walk freely in the zoo but that does not mean they attack people using the pathway to the zoo. There are monkeys, crocodiles, lions, snakes, different species of birds, deers, antelopes etc all in the zoo. There are hopes to expand the zoo to include more animals. It is worth paying a visit to the zoo so to help management raise more money to help expand it.

Ghana as it stands currently has a little over 70 languages being spoken. The languages are in 9 major families which have being fully detailed in the book KNOW GHANA BETTER . The 9 major language families have words that cut across the various languages in them making all the Ghanaian languages inter-related. The 9 language families are : Ga-Dangme languages Guan languages Akan languages Ewe languages Mole-Dagbon languages Gurma languages Gurunsi languages Ghana-Togo Mountain languages Senufo languages There are few Afro-asiatic languages like Hausa and Fulfulde (Fulani) as well as Indo-European and Semitic languages spoken in Ghana. These are due to colonisation and religion influences. The 9 major ethnic groups can be broken down to about 73 tribes which each having its unique language and even dialects. Most of the dialects are much closer to their mother languages hence, one may not lay much emphasis on them. INDO-EUROPEAN LANGUAGES IN GHANA: Indo-European languages are those lan
